Weddings…
Alongside the licensure studies I have been preparing for two weddings on which I’ll be working with other ordained ministers. Since I am not a legal marry-er (officiant), I cannot wed couples without another ordained minister present and participating in the ceremony.
Anyway, I have the bulk of the work in the ceremony, which for many is not a big deal, there are stock phrases and messages that ministers have been delivering for years. I have a hard time doing that, I love the personal message directed to the couple, based on our relationship, or their history together, laced with biblical teaching.
I think the Ephesians 5:22-33 passage is powerful and have used it repeatedly as the center of the homily. Since the passage is so Christocentric, I have ease weaving the gospel story into the wedding message. Every time I write these messages/homilies, I am reminded of God’s wonderful gift in Christ, and I am reminded of Christ’ powerful and generous work on the cross.
Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Threaded with what I have been steeped in the past several weeks, undoubtedly the richness of the theology glistens and shimmers in the joy of participating in the Lord’s Supper with the Body of Christ.
More to come.
